So another year has gone by with out a Journal Entry from me, I best write one. Not that it is going to be the happiest entry of all time.
Once again, winter came and the number of photography outings reduced. On top of that, the later half of last year become quite stressful job wise, culmulating in redundency for the entire work force. Fortunately I found a contract pretty quickly with a company I've worked for before, which has led to a full time role. There was also an illness leading to bereavement in the famliy.
So my mind hasn't really been on my dA account for the last 6 months or so.
With the coming spring and a new job and stability comes new possibiliies, and I find my mind coming back to photography. Especially having purchased a new camera.
I've posted a few images from the camera already, as per usual though, the response after a few months away has been dissapointing. I have a love hate relationship with dA. You see whilst it is an excellent place for displaying art, and viewing inspirational images by other artists and photographers, it is a place that requires and awful lot of work to get noticed. Sometimes I think that dA is more of a social media site than a artist community. The more +watch, +fave and comments you make, the more attention you get. Regardless of how good your images may be.
Which isn't to say the best people don't get recognized, I'm sure they do, but I do not think they get that recoginition just by posting a few pictures and sitting back and waiting for the comments and faves to flood in.
The problem I always have is that I want my images to be viewed on their own merit. I don't care so much about having thosands of page views a day and similar comments...the work load would just be too much anyway. I post images for people to look at, and dA isn't very good at letting people see it. If you go to the front page, you'll not get whats new, you'll get what is popular. And besides, new images fly by so fast. Unless you build lasting relationships with people, self promote your work, and spend a lot of time socially engineering your profile with the rest of the community, you stand next to no chance of being seen.
For a photographer like myself, who's work isn't of the very highest standard (though I hope I am above average at least), getting noticed is but a pipe dream. Even a DD did little to boost my visibility. If I post an image I'm proud off, and get no feedback, I start feeling that my images must be completely rubbish!
Ultimately though, so be it. If I do not have the time or inclination to play the game, or the confidence to promote myself gratuitously, then I will have to live with my images getting a handful of pageviews and maybe one or two faves. As the spring moves to summer, and I post more and more images, I expect the situation will improve...but should I take another winter break, I'm sure I'll be back to square one this time next year
This is the way it is, it is the same on every other site. Ultimately I'll have to put more time into dA (sucking time from other activities), or find another avenue to get feedback (such as joining a photography club perhaps).
Well, thats my stream of drivel for the is year, I hope you enjoy what ever images I get this year, and happy snapping/drawing/painting/prosing
